CASBA 2016 “Plastering a Strawbale House Workshop”
3 day workshop on Sept 23-25 at a site in Santa Cruz County, CA.
Come learn about Earth Plaster at this 3 day workshop where we will apply clay plasters on a strawbale house under construction in the hills of Santa Cruz. The house is designed and built by BOA Constructor green Building and Design. The plastering instructors are Yoshi Makino and Bob Theis, with assistance from CJ Clavet. We will review how the structure was built and then proceed with discussion of natural plaster options, plastering materials, mix recipes, tools, and techniques. You will leave with information on how to detail windows, sills, doors and other openings in preparation for plaster as well as decorative features you can add to your project. Participants will trowel on the building’s Brown Coat and work on a sample of the Finish Coat of clay paint.
A mix of instruction time, hands on experience along with a handout will provide you with the basic knowledge of straw bale building and plasters to go build your own project. Evenings will allow for additional question/answer time and some photo presentations.
The goal of the workshop is to accommodate every participant’s interest and skill level; each participant can expect to rotate through aspects of the plastering activities, to ensure the broadest possible hands-on experience.
