CASBA Workshop 2022
Plaster Workshop Series

Base Coat Plastering February 26-27 w/ instructors Bob Theis & Allison Arnold

Scratch Coat Plastering March 12-13 w/ instructors Bob Theis & Kita Glass

Finish Coat Plastering March 26-27 w/ instructors Bob Theis & Erica Ann Bush

Join us to learn how to apply clay plaster. We will be plastering a load-bearing straw bale building at the Youth Spirit Artworks’ Tiny House Empowerment Village in Oakland, California. Each two day workshop will focus on a different stage in the plastering process. Attend all three to see the complete process. In the first weekend we will apply the base coat onto the surface of the straw bales. During the second weekend we will apply the brown coat over the first coat of plaster. And for the third weekend we will apply the finish coat of plaster, including decorative techniques. A mix of instruction time and hands-on experience will provide you with the basic knowledge of clay plasters and how to apply them over straw bales and other surfaces. Each weekend will include basic instruction regarding different plaster substrates, the benefits of clay plasters, clay plaster recipes, materials selection, application instruction, and troweling techniques. The Finish Coat weekend will include additional instruction in finish coat techniques and decoration. You may attend any of the weekends. There is no requirement to attend all three. The goal of the workshop is to accommodate every participant’s interest and skill level. Each participant can expect to participate in the various aspects of the plastering process to ensure the broadest possible hands-on experience. Lunch time will allow for presentations and additional question-answer time.

Our host for the workshop is the organization Youth Spirit Artworks, a nonprofit arts and job training program for low-income youth. The site of the project is their Tiny House Empowerment Village, a community of tiny houses built by Youth Spirit Artworks for unhoused youth. The building we will plaster is designed as an art gallery for Youth Spirit Artworks.

This unique load-bearing straw bale building was designed by Bob Theis, an architect in Berkeley who will be co-instructing the plaster workshops. Co-instructor Kita Glass is a natural builder in Santa Cruz with a focus on cob, straw bale, clay and lime plasters and working with found and reclaimed materials.

Cost:  $150 each weekend. *Limited scholarships available upon request.

Accommodations:  Pack a lunch for yourself each day. Additional snacks and beverages will be provided. The workshops will begin at 10 am and end each day at 3pm. There are bathrooms located on site. Site location, driving instruction and other information are provided with confirmation of registration.
